 “17th Annual Tools

for Success Family Conference”

At the Schultz Center on Wednesday February 29, 2012.

This is event is sponsored by Duval County Public Schools and the Exceptional Education & Student Services Department.  Last year, more than 250 people attended The Tools Conference. We would like to expand that number this year.   The Honorable Betty Burney will give the opening address.  This year, the keynote speaker is Mr. Tom Nurse, a well known speaker who provides support to individuals and families with special needs.

The attachments includes a memo with TOOLS conference information; two event flyers/posters to print out and post; a registration form to copy and distribute as appropriate; along with a listing of the many topics and time frames of the sessions offered.

A new program is being offered through Beaches Resources that will benefit students at MCSMS who have been victims or witnesses of violence.

This program:

  • Co-facilitated by two of their best therapists from Child Guidance Center.
  • 16-Week program
  • Flexible timing: could be during the day, during lunch, during Team Up, or even before school. Once week, Tuesdays or Thursdays preferred.
  • 10-12 kids, both genders. They will take 6th graders, but would like to focus on the older kids, so the 6th graders would need to be more mature.

Requirements: Student must have been a victim of or a witness to a traumatic event; e.g. domestic violence, sexual assault, natural disaster, physical assault, violent crime, etc. The types of behaviors these children might display include cutting, extreme anger, and emotional outbursts.

Any parent wanting to forward a name on to the Guidance Office to participate or benefit from this program, please have the parent direct all names and information on to Ms. Dean, Guidance Secretary, at 247-5977 ext 1187 or deanj1@duvalschools.org.
