Advanced Language Arts Reading Assignment

 

Directions:  Please read the required reading per grade level.  Once the book has been completed, please complete the following assignment.   This will be due the first week of school.

 

Reading Requirement:

6th:  Missing Gator of Gumbo Limbo by Jean Craighead George                 Lexile: 740

7th:  The Cay by Theodore Taylor                                                                  Lexile: 860

8th:  Island of the Blue Dolphin by Scott O’Dell                                         Lexile: 1000

 

Language Arts Literary Letter Rubric

5 POINTS – HEADING – Underline the title or put it in italics if typing

5 POINTS – CURRENT DATE – Written out (August 31, 2011)

5 POINTS – GREETING – Capitalize the first word, the name, and put a

                     comma at the end (Dear Grandma,)

10 POINTS - FIRST PARAGRAPH – This paragraph introduces your 

                     book. Include the title, author, and a short blurb giving general

                     information  about the book. Minimum of 5 sentences.

10 POINTS – SECOND PARAGRAPH – This paragraph should contain a

                   detailed summary of what you have read so far. Watch your use

                   of pronouns. Be sure to include antecedents. Remember, the

                   teacher has not read this book. Explain what is happening and

                   why. Think about the 5 W’s (Who, What, When, Where, and

                   Why) Minimum of 5 sentences.

10 POINTS – THIRD PARAGRAPH – This paragraph needs to contain ONE of the following strategies:

·         CONNECTION – Text-to-Self, Text-to Text, Text-to-World This book reminds me of…

·         PREDICTION – What do you predict will happen next? Support your prediction with evidence from the text.

·         VISUALIZATION – Describe in DETAIL something in the book that you were able to picture in your head. The reader needs to be able to visualize your description. Minimum of 5 sentences.

5 POINTS – CLOSING – Only capitalize the first word of the closing. Put

                   your name underneath. Be sure to put a comma after the first line:

Connection Paper:

You are responsible for writing a one page summary of the book (must be at least 150 pages). You must then write a paragraph (at least 8 complete sentences) discussing two of the following connections – text-to-self (how do you connect to the text), text-to-world (how does the text connect  to something you’ve seen on TV, in a movie, or possibly even heard on the news as current event happening in the world), text-to-text (how does this text  relate to something you’ve previously read in another book, magazine, or internet article).

 

Your heading must include the title, author, and number of pages in the book chosen, in addition to your first/last name, date and MOD.

 

Rubric for each individual connection paper (total of 50 points per paper)

 

10 points - Proper Heading

10 points - One Page Summary (without skipping lines, front side only)

30 points - Connection Paragraph (at least 8 sentences making one of the above connections with valid support)
